Many of today's vehicles are built using windshields containing metal oxide or other reflective materials that essentially "bounces" the cell phone signal, must like they prevent some of the harmful UV rays from entering the car. Connecting your phone to the right external antenna can extend the coverage area and minimize dropped calls.
External antennas can connect to the phone in three different ways:
- Using a phone cradle with built-in antenna connection.
- Using a 3 watt signal repeater.
- The Motorola 2 watt car-phone (phone, car-kit and signal booster in one unit).

- If you travel in areas where coverage is generally very good, the inside dual band antenna will work well.
- If you travel in the fringe areas of the normal coverage, the external on-glass antenna is the recommended alternative.
- For drivers that demand maximum reception, a magnet mount or roof mount (drilled hole) is the best choice as they use the metal roof of the vehicle for ground plane, creating optimal coverage.
